Pedigrees
We aim to present the pedigrees of all active breederqueens, from whom there will be island mated daughters for sale, from the previous year and for the current production year.
Pedigrees for the dronelines on our two island mating stations Tunö and Mandö, will be presented in the same way.
Note:
The dronelines in the latest mating are expressed by 3 numbers (IN155+IN193+IN022) which means, that the dronepool on the island, is provided by 3 sisters from the same line. Further back in the pedigree, the droneline will only be expressed by its line number (L.IN015).
This strategy gives a much wider genetic representation of the droneline, and by this slows down the loss of genetic broadth, which is a classic and well known problem in the system where the single top queen of the line is chosen as source for the droneproviders. Provided that the relevant line has a sufficiently high uniformity, there are no disadvantage in using 3 sisters instead of the top queen. A second advantage by this system, is that it is possible to do a mating back on the line without making a sister-daughter mating, as the top queen is reserved for the purpose of heading the future generation. This means that the stabilising mating will be an aunt-nephew mating, which is by far to prefer.
Breederqueens 2024:
Until late May, the pedigrees and data on the queens will be presented on a sistergroup level, for the relevant queen lines. Only a selection of the sister group's queens will be described
When the final decisions are taken, after the hygienic test, in late May, the actual breederqueens will be highlighted.

Anatolian line with a very high level of stability and docility. As pure bred the vitality could be higher, but everything is regained in the random mating. |

A calm and stable line of Caucasian origin. The line has probably passed its peak of performance for now, but will much probably come back on the old level again later. Due to its high level of cultivation, this lines can probably be matched with even very foreing genetics, without being struck by wildness and instability. |

The line has its origin in a direct import from Caucasus. The energy has faded a bit in this combination, but it is still bees with a fairly high productivity. With the right combination in the random mating the excess of energy will be back again. |

Generally easy-to-manage bees, who, however, in unstable weather often just need a single puff of smoke before visiting. A characteristic that reveals the Anatolian origin of the line. Very robust bees who goes through the winter with a low feed consumption. Builds up quite large colonies, and maintain the size for the whole season. . |

A line of very old origin, which, however, is new to me. Easy-to-manage bees that produces very large colonies. Has given a honey yield well above the average, which, however, probably needs to be corrected a little due to the outcross, since the line is of totally foreign origin. Might be the drone line for 2024. |

The combination is a mating back on own line, so I had expected a somewhat lower honey yield, as the line is quite old, and therefore well and truly cultivated in advance. The expectations turned out not to be true, as the group is clearly at the high end of the scale. This also shows the robustness of the drone strategy with 3 sisters as drone providers, instead of the classic all drone providers from of a single queen. Very easy to handle bees, that just continue to be one of my best and most stable lines. |

A line which is as old as the 025 line, but which has occasionally had some inexplicable problems with its temperament. Not that they are mad, but just that they shouldn't have these outcomes. However, it is still one of my top lines as their production results are always reliable. Rarely have individual high jumpers on the yield, as many lines have, but all animals just deliver a high result. |

Line IN119 IN119xL.IN025:.20-T001(MKN)xM102(MKN):.19-Pure Macedonica, Athos
New blood of Macedonian origin which has really surprised positively. Big beautiful colonies, who have a very high honey potential. The yield, however, is probably somewhat influenced by heterosis, as the combination is so young. Despite the great vitality, there has not been a single swarm in the otherwise very large group of siblings. Gentle and easy to handle, although several of them could fill up 5 boxes of bees after the honey was harvested. Very high expectations for the line. |

Island mating stations:
Tunø (Tunö)
Tunö is our main mating island, for queens meant for breeding purposes. The island is situated 7 kilometres off the east coast of mainland Jutland, and 4 kilometres east of the bigger island Samsö. This isolated position and the fact that the area is one the areas with most sun hours in Denmark makes it an ideal place for a mating station.
The island is 3,5 km2 which is a who is easy to control for feral bees, especially as there are no other beekeeprs on the island.
The drone producing apiary holds 12 colonies in the mating season.

An old line, with a slightly different origin – Combination lines of Carnica origin tend to fade out after a few generations. This is just not the situation here. |
Droneproviding line 2024Line IN344
|
A very old line, but new in our breeding stock. After a few (expected) twist in F1, the stability is now back on track. |
Mandø (Mandö)
Mandö is our secondary mating island. The island is situated 8 kilometres off the westcoast of southwestern part of mainland Jutland. It is situated central in the danish part of the wadden sea, which is an area dominated by marshes and vast grasslands. The remote position makes it a very good mating station, but as the environment in the area can be pretty harsh in summer and spring, we do only winter a few colonies on the island, to assert presence on the island. New droneproviders are moved to the apiary in early May each year.
The island is 7,5 km2, but as the main part of the island is grassland, with no trees or scrubs, it is easy to control the island for feral bees. No other beekeepers on the island.
The droneproviding apiary holds 9 colonies in the mating season.
